William Hague denies gay affair with ministerial aide

The foreign secretary William Hague has for the first time denied internet rumours that he is involved in a gay affair with a ministerial aide.

Mr Hague, who is married, has been the subject of online rumours for some time in regards to his relationship with new special adviser Chris Myers.

The political blogger Paul Staines (better known online as Guido Fawkes) claimed that Mr Hague shared a hotel bedroom with Mr Myers during the election campaign.

The blog quoted a witness at the hotel who said: “The couple’s body language at breakfast was eye opening.”

In a statement, the Foreign Office said: “Any suggestion that the Foreign Secretary’s relationship with Chris Myers is anything other than a purely professional one is wholly inaccurate and unfounded.

The statement, while denying an affair, does not refute the allegation that they shared a room.

Mr Myers was appointed a special advisor to Mr Hague after the election but only took up his post in July after completing his graduate diploma in Law at Durham University.

On Saturday, the Daily Telegraph reported that an unnamed married cabinet minister was considering taking action to prevent allegations that he had been involved in a gay affair with a ministerial aide.

PinkNews.co.uk editorial staff had been told by an influential blogger to "get up early on Sunday", suggesting that a Sunday newspaper might publish revelations relating to a cabinet minister.

In the event no newspaper published allegations relating to Mr Hague.
